Burgh Castle

These Ancient ruins of a Roman 3rd Century Saxon Shore fort, were built on a low cliff above the Waveney estuary as a part of the Roman network of coastal defences and likely abandoned just over a hundred years later. Three of its stone walls survived, almost to their original height and are an impressive sight. This makes Burgh Castle one of the best preserved Roman monuments in Britain.

Today the main route into the fort is via the eastern gate. The fourth west wall has long since collapsed into the surrounding marshes, leaving dramatic stunning panoramic views across Breydon Water.
